Parents as Teachers
Parents as Teachers is a free program designed to provide additional services beyond what Start Off Smart offers. Parents as Teachers includes a monthly, one-hour home visit by a certified Parent Educator. (Additional children in the home constitutes one and one-half hour visits once a month.)
Parent Educators will make appointments with parents well in advance before visiting. Parent Educators are also trained in providing a variety of child health and development screenings.
Due to the popularity of the program, families are placed on a waiting list. Time on the waiting list is not usually long however. Parents and children alike enjoy this time spent with an educator for several reasons:
- Children enjoy one-on-one time with the Parent Educator who brings a bag filled with teaching tools, toys, and a free gift book.
- Parents love the visits because they may easily interact with the Parent Educator who is knowledgeable in child development and health.
- Parents learn to help their children learn through play.
